What is your favorite family tradition?

Please, share your favorite tradition.  It can be a party, holiday, hunting trip, or any traditional event.  Please, include details about special foods, decorations, songs, or activities you share with your loved ones.  Remember, a tradition is something that you or your family do year after year.  Can you guess from the picture below one of my family traditions?

Vickers' Family Thanksgivings

  1. I love family traditions. As my children grow older, we continue to create little traditions throughout the year. My favorite tradition that we have is Christmas Eve and continues into Christmas Day. We begin Christmas Eve by baking cookie for Santa, we then get ready for church, come home from church and get everything ready for Santa (cookies and reindeer food), find out where Santa is, and read the Christmas story. Christmas morning we wake up and have our Christmas, eat breakfast with my in-laws, relax with our new "stuff", eat lunch with my parents, and have a light dinner with my brother and sister-in-law. These are precious times that I hope will be fond memories for my children one day.

  2. What a fun topic to think of an answer to! One of my favorite family traditions is our Thanksgiving Day gathering. Though we have always spent the day at my parents' house, this year the torch was passed to my husband and me. We loved being able to have both of our families around one big dinner table eating great food and talking for hours! I have always helped my mom and grandmother cook sides, but the new tradition of me cooking the turkey is definitely an intimidating one. Thank goodness my mom woke up early just to be by her phone for the "Help! Emergency!" call at 7:00 am. : ) After dinner, the girls always sit around with several copies of the Black Friday newspaper ads and plan out our shopping excursions the next day - while the men sit and try to pretend like we're not going to spend tons of money. ;-) I thought that changing our family tradition would make it feel less special, but I'm so glad that it has instead helped bring everybody together!

  3. Thanks for sharing!
Kris, my children and nieces and nephews all take turns reading the Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve every year. They remember quickly who read it the year before and who will get to read it next. This tradition is a great motivator to learn to read well for our younger kids in the family.
Jessica, I love Thanksgiving as well. We always spend it at our hunting camp with my husband's whole family. I can almost taste the smoked turkey we have every year, it is so good!

  4. Every year for Christmas my family normally waits until the evening time to fellowship with each other. The evening seems to work out best for us since everyone has busy lives. My sister has been given the task of passing out gifts every year. This is something that initially started when she was younger and we just continued on with it every year. Our buffet normally includes the usual traditional spread with the addition of fried chicken and my sister's famous buttermilk pie. After everyone is finished eating, we all get together and Skype with my brother and his family in Houston, TX. I love Christmas and I look forward to it every year.

  5. I love that Ursula! Christmas eve is the most difficult day for my extended family as we have all gotten older. My brother and sister have in-laws that want them to celebrate with them on Christmas eve as well. My mother gets really emotional when we can not all be there together. I always love to hear what everyone eats that day. We have a seafood feast which some people find odd, but we love it!

  6. My favorite family tradition is called "Istmas" which means almost Christmas. It started 10 years ago and was named by my three step-children who were 6, 12 and 13 at the time. My husband was not scheduled to get them on Christmas Day until 4:00 because they had a tradition of late lunch with their other grandparents but on Christmas Day we also have dinner at my husband's parents. That left very little time to celebrate Christmas as a family. So we decided to celebrate on the morning of the 24th and it was perfect! We stayed in our pjs, ate breakfast and opened presents. Then we could spend the rest of the day playing together with no rush. We even invite my parents and my in-laws to join us. Over the last 10 years there have been many changes in our family, including we have two little boys and one of our older boys is now married with a daughter. It is still a looked forward to tradition at our house to have "Istmas" each year with our whole family - all 13 of us including grandparents!
